EU Ready to Support Armenia-Azerbaijan Border Demarcation and Conduct Monitoring: Charles Michel

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has stated that the EU is prepared to assist Azerbaijan and Armenia in the demarcation of their state borders if necessary. This information was reported by Sputnik Armenia, referencing Azerbaijan's media.

“The EU is ready to make efforts to achieve progress in various areas. For instance, in the matter of border demarcation between Azerbaijan and Armenia. We are prepared to send European experts on this issue, and if there is a need and willingness, Europe is also ready to conduct monitoring,” Michel said during a joint press conference in Baku with the President of Azerbaijan.

He noted that there is a need to discuss the border disputes between Azerbaijan and Armenia as well. Michel added that the EU hopes that the issues regarding minefields in Nagorno-Karabakh and the individuals detained there will be resolved soon.

In Yerevan the day prior, Michel expressed hope that the situation at the Armenian border could be resolved through negotiations. It is worth noting that Azerbaijani armed forces have been present in the area of Lake Sevan in Armenia's Syunik Province since May 12, attempting to establish a foothold there. A similar situation is also observed in the border areas of Kut, Verin Shorsa, and Norabak villages in Gegharkunik Province.

Several rounds of negotiations have taken place with the mediation of the Russian side. The adversary currently has no intention of retreating. Armenia has appealed to the CSTO and requested military assistance from Russia. The military-political leadership states that they wish to resolve the issue peacefully but do not rule out the use of force if negotiations do not yield results.

Additionally, on May 25, a serviceman, Junior Sergeant Gevorg Khurshudyan, received fatal injuries from gunfire by the adversary in the vicinity of the Verin Shorsa village in Gegharkunik Province.
