Belarus to Allow Military Use Against Protesters
President Lukashenko has signed a law that will permit the military to be used against protesters. According to Korrespondent, referencing the Belarusian presidential press service, amendments to the laws on "Protection of Sovereignty and Constitutional Order" will allow the imposition of a state of emergency in the event of mass disorder.
At the same time, it is noted that disturbances may involve attempts to forcibly change the constitutional order, seizure or appropriation of power, armed clashes, mass disturbances, interethnic and inter-religious conflicts that are accompanied by violence or threaten the lives of citizens.
In the event of disturbances in Belarus, authorities may suspend the production and sale of media products, establish special procedures for journalist accreditation, and restrict access to internet resources.
Meanwhile, the armed forces may be engaged in combating terrorism, maintaining public safety, preventing mass disturbances, and ensuring the safety of protected individuals.
