Turkey ranks second in the world for the number of requests submitted to Twitter for content deletion. According to the social media platform's 2020 report, the highest number of removal requests last year came from India, Turkey, Russia, and Pakistan, as reported by Ermenihaber.
This report, released biannually by Twitter, includes data from July to September 2020. During this period, governments from various countries submitted a total of 361 requests for the removal of posts from officially validated pages of 199 journalists worldwide. This figure represents a 26 percent increase compared to the previous report covering the January to June timeframe of the same year.
India was the country with the highest number of requests, which were primarily directed against posts made by individuals representing the United States. Twitter complied with only 5 of these requests.
The report also revealed that aside from requests related to the media sector, Turkey had submitted a total of 49,525 requests for content deletion during the specified period. Of these, 7,070 were based on court decisions, while 42,455 were grounded in legal acts.
