Human Rights Defender Addresses Issues Faced by People with Disabilities and Their Treatment

The Human Rights Defender has issued a statement addressing the issues faced by people with disabilities and their treatment in society. The statement reads: 'The stereotypical perception or the erroneous attitude that protecting the rights of people with disabilities means providing assistance to those with health limitations or that it even suggests a 'pitying approach' or help driven by 'sympathy' constitutes a serious obstacle for people with disabilities. In reality, the focus should be on ensuring a dignified treatment for people with disabilities, creating conditions for them to live independently and participate fully in public life.

The state must create opportunities for people with disabilities to independently and dignifiedly exercise their rights, thanks to their life skills. It is essential to eliminate barriers posed by the environment and to create equal opportunities for everyone (including work skills and conditions, infrastructure, attitude, etc.). Notably, all types of disabilities and their specificities should be considered during this process.

Due to misconceptions and stereotypes, other rights, such as guarantees of dignity, privacy, and freedom of information, are also chain-violated. The situation is particularly concerning regarding the rights of students with disabilities in specialized institutions after they reach adulthood, as they are more vulnerable to exercising their rights independently, engaging in public life, and securing employment.

Moreover, during the coronavirus pandemic, the systemic issues surrounding independent living and community engagement have worsened. As a result of this situation, people become isolated from society, deprived not only of their opportunity for community involvement but also of the realization of other rights.'
