Criminal Prosecution to be Initiated Against Former Mayor of Meghri, CEC Approves Prosecutor's Motion

It has recently come to light that the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has unlawfully concluded its session and approved the prosecutor's motion regarding the apparent gross violation of the rights of Mikitar Zakaryan. This was announced on his Facebook page by Yerem Sargsyan, the lawyer for the former mayor of Meghri, Mikitar Zakaryan: “We will challenge this illegal decision of the CEC in accordance with the law,” he wrote.

In an interview with Hraparak, Zakaryan's lawyer stated that they are awaiting further actions from law enforcement bodies. “This means that if they have applied with a motion to involve him as a defendant and to initiate a process to deprive him of liberty, it indicates that something should be done next. However, at this moment, Mikitar Zakaryan has not received any notification, and we have not been informed about any actions to participate in,” he noted.

It is worth recalling that Zakaryan had expressed an intention to take up a mandate in the National Assembly and had resigned from the position of mayor of Meghri on July 9.
