Construction of a New Armenia-Georgia Bridge Has Begun

Construction works for a new bridge began over the Debed River at the Sadakhlou-Bagrataashen border crossing point.

Isabella Muradyan, the project manager for the construction of the new bridge, told reporters on July 9 that the old bridge was damaged and is no longer capable of servicing the volume of transit goods and passenger transportation at the Sadakhlou-Bagrataashen border crossing. Consequently, all heavy vehicles are almost constantly stuck in queues. Therefore, from a technical standpoint, and regarding the increasing volume of goods and passenger transport, as well as its strategic significance, it was necessary to have a more substantial throughput and a faster, more technically equipped infrastructure.

Muradyan stated that the new bridge will consist of two bridges, each having one lane in each direction, along with drainage and lighting systems. The new bridge will be more convenient for traffic and will be able to handle a much larger load, ensuring the safe movement of both freight and passenger vehicles.

“The bridge will be 160 meters long. It will have approach roads on both sides, with about a two percent incline towards Georgia from Armenia. The Debed River, which forms the border between Armenia and Georgia, runs through the middle of the bridge. The construction budget is 7.3 million euros. The construction is expected to be completed by May 2022,” said Muradyan.
