Will the Olympic Games Take Place? A 5th Wave of COVID-19 Expected in Tokyo
As the Tokyo Olympic Games approach, a fifth wave of coronavirus infections is anticipated, according to the Japan Times. Authorities previously reported a steady increase in infection cases, attributed to crowded streets and the spread of the Delta variant.
Noriyo Omagari, chief advisor to the Tokyo government and director of the Japan National Center for Global Health and Medicine's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that the infection is returning to Tokyo, emphasizing the need to curb foot traffic within the city.
Previously, there was discussion regarding the possibility of holding the “Tokyo 2020” Olympic Games without spectators, a scenario that Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga did not rule out in the event of a reinstatement of the state of emergency in Tokyo.
It is worth noting that the Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 in Tokyo.
