What Happens If Someone from Azerbaijan Runs for President in Artsakh? «Joughour»
According to the newspaper «Joughour», on June 21, the day after the extraordinary parliamentary elections in Armenia, a rally was held in the capital of Artsakh, Stepanakert, demanding the resignation of President Arayik Harutyunyan.
The participants of the action justified their demands not only due to the severe consequences of the 44-day war but also because of Harutyunyan's visit to the ruling party headquarters the night following the elections. While citizens raised their voices, such protests could not only affect the internal political life in Artsakh but may also pose dangers in the external sphere. Half a year after the war ended and following the loss of 75% of Artsakh, seeking Arayik Harutyunyan's resignation in this manner could lead to irreparable losses for Artsakh.
This would signify a new and more complex crisis, and there are circulating opinions that after his resignation, it may even be impossible to hold elections in Artsakh again. Thus, as some forces in Artsakh bring the demand for Harutyunyan’s resignation to the forefront and express intolerance towards him, they may be attempting to destabilize the situation.
Meanwhile, it is essential to understand the implications of showcasing internal political ambitions and what could happen if, for instance, someone unlawfully presents a candidacy from the Azerbaijani side for the elections. Under no circumstances should provocation be allowed; Arayik Harutyunyan was elected the President of Artsakh in spring 2020. According to the Constitution of Artsakh, he is the head of the executive branch. His term in office runs until 2024, and despite criticism, his legitimacy must be recognized.
