Record Heat in Canada Leads to Nearly 500 Deaths
Due to record heat in Canada, the number of deaths has reached hundreds. In British Columbia alone, 486 people have died from the heat in the last five days, the majority of whom were elderly or had pre-existing health issues, according to BBC News.
It has been reported that temperatures in British Columbia have soared to nearly +50 degrees Celsius. Specifically, the city of Lytton recorded the highest temperature at +49.6 degrees. The provincial governor stated that this week has been the hottest so far, with temperatures not previously exceeding +45 degrees.
It is noteworthy that most residents in the province do not have air conditioning units at home, as summers are typically cooler. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. Doctors have advised people to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and wear hats when going outside.
