There is Progress, Some Prisoners are Returning Home: ICRC Head on Armenian Prisoners Held in Baku
The Red Cross is in contact with them. The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, discussed Armenian prisoners held in Baku in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper, as reported by the Sputnik Armenia Telegram channel.
“There is progress, some prisoners are returning home. However, disputes continue regarding certain detainees - whether they are considered prisoners of war, what their status is, and whether they can return. We are actively working on these issues,” Maurer stated.
“We are in contact with both sides as well. I hope that in the future we will be able to find a solution for all detained individuals,” Maurer noted.
In response to a question about the conditions in which detainees are held in Azerbaijan, the ICRC stated they do not publicly assess this matter. “We visit to evaluate the conditions of detention, however, as you know, this is a confidential process for the ICRC. We cooperate with the authorities of all countries in the region to present our observations. I cannot say more than that,” he added.
