Stop the Disgraceful Political Persecutions: Charchyan's Lawyer to the SCC

“It would be desirable,” that the Special Investigative Service (SIS) halts the disgraceful political persecutions, including this case's extreme primitive and absurd pursuit beyond the elementary norms of criminal proceedings. Such a statement was made by Armen Charchyan’s lawyer Aram Vardevanyan, responding to the SIS’s announcement.

“Yesterday, the SIS received a request concerning 7 members of the National Assembly and 3 doctors who enjoy great public trust in the medical field. The mentioned request was addressed to the body conducting the proceedings. Upon examining the elementary norms of the criminal procedure code, including the changes made in 2020, it becomes clear that the issue of guarantees falls precisely within their investigative jurisdiction as they supposedly are the body conducting the proceedings. At the same time, the SIS is also informed that a request has been filed with the Prosecutor General regarding the lifting of the detention, thus the real purpose of this statement is merely to make a statement. The SIS, after considering basic human treatment and proper assessment of the materials of the case, would not:

1. Initiate a case based on an anonymous source;
2. Turn the press spokesperson into a subject of criminal proceedings;
3. Cause the Professor's health condition to deteriorate;
4. Most importantly, bring charges based on a fabricated video.

It would be desirable to eliminate this situation and avoid a public debate of this level, as the health of a deserving person is at stake, and detention has effectively turned into mere punishment.
