Hrant Tokhatyan Responds to Council Member Levon Zakaryan
During the Yerevan City Council meeting on June 22, Levon Zakaryan, a member of the "My Step" faction, raised the issue of the "Kanaz" Cultural Center. It is important to note that since 2017, the "Kanaz" Cultural Center has been provided on a 10-year gratuitous use basis to Hrant Tokhatyan's "Alphabet of Arts" foundation by a decision of the Yerevan City Council.
Zakaryan mentioned that the center was granted to Hrant Tokhatyan under specific conditions, with a concrete annual investment program. The first five years were to include an investment plan and an annual report on the specific investment program and work done.
"I wanted to ask if there have been any changes, because there has been no movement for about a year to a year and a half. If there are changes, please let us know; if not, then this is already the fourth year that nothing is being done. What are we going to do, are we just going to leave this center as it is, doing nothing?" asked the council member from the "My Step" faction.
The head of the Property Management Department of the City Hall, Garegin Khachatryan, also noted that an appropriate letter has been sent to the operator requesting a report on what has been done and which obligations under the contract have been fulfilled and which have not. "Of course, objective reasons have also been presented regarding certain obligations not being met," he emphasized.
To clarify the issue, we contacted actor Hrant Tokhatyan, who stated that a meeting with council members is likely to take place soon to resolve the matter. When asked whether any investment has been made over the years, he responded, "Yes, there have been investments." In response to the question of whether he is ready to present the relevant documents regarding the work done, Hrant Tokhatyan replied, "It will depend on what all parties expect; based on that, we will make our decisions. Let's wait and see."
