Video: Shaki Waterfall Has Turned Black

A video has been published on the Internet showing that the Shaki Waterfall located in the Syunik region is flowing black water. The footage has already caused a stir among users.

The video's author reports that it was filmed today, June 25. Inquiring about the situation depicted in the video, Sputnik Armenia contacted acting Minister of Environment Romanos Petrosyan. He stated that there is no need for concern, as the color change of the water is due to annual maintenance work in the waterfall's catchment area.

“Once a year, cleaning works are carried out in the catchment area above the Shaki Waterfall, removing the silt and sediments accumulated at the bottom of the catchment, which flows with the water. This is the reason why the water has a color like this for some time,” said Petrosyan.

The Shaki Waterfall is located in the Vorotan gorge of Armenia's Syunik region, on the Shaki River. It has a height of 15-17 meters. Despite the fact that a hydroelectric power plant has been built on the river, which sometimes significantly reduces the flow from the waterfall, Shaki Waterfall has been included in the list of natural monuments of Armenia since 2008.
