Priest Accused of Pouring Nitric Acid on Seven Bishops
A 37-year-old priest has been arrested in Athens for allegedly pouring nitric acid on seven bishops, as reported by HJ, citing euronews.
It is reported that he brought the chemical substance to the Petraki Monastery, where a discussion was underway regarding the priest's potential dismissal for drug possession. During the announcement of the decision, the accused splashed nitric acid on the members of the court.
The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Hieronymus, expressed his bewilderment, stating, “I do not know what has prompted him to resort to such an act—desperation or a feeling of revenge?”
In addition to the clergy members, one police officer and two members of the ecclesiastical court who rushed to help were also injured from the nitric acid. The Minister of Health commented, “This is an unprecedented incident, a tragic event. We rushed to provide first aid to our clergy. We now need to assess their condition to determine further treatment.”
Reports indicate that three of the injured sustained severe facial burns, and they are expected to have a long recovery process ahead.
