The USA Congratulates the Armenian People and Urges Political Forces to Avoid Political Retribution
The United States congratulates the people of Armenia on the parliamentary elections held on June 20. This is stated in a statement by the U.S. State Department.
“We welcome the generally positive assessment of the elections by the observer mission. We are pleased that, according to the preliminary assessment of the OSCE observer mission, human rights and fundamental freedoms were largely respected, and participants in the electoral race had the opportunity to conduct free campaigning. The counting of votes on election day was also assessed positively. We share the concerns of the observer group regarding the inflammatory rhetoric among the main competing forces. We urge all political forces in Armenia to respect the results of these elections as soon as they are confirmed, to use the legal processes established for electoral complaints to address concerning issues, and to avoid political retribution, so that Armenia can continue its path towards a sovereign, democratic, peaceful, and prosperous future,” the U.S. urged.
It is noted that the United States is committed to strengthening its partnership with Armenia based on shared democratic values. “We welcome Armenia’s achievements in reforms and the fight against corruption and encourage a continuation of this path in accordance with the expectations of the Armenian people from 2018. We call on all parties to respect the rule of law and democratic principles and look forward to collaborating with the new government,” the State Department stated, thanking U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy and her staff for their dedication and hard work in Armenia.
