Can you imagine, people are discussing the proposal to turn YSU's 'Black Building' into a hotel: lecturer

A few months ago, it was announced that the authorities wanted to sell university buildings. This was stated by Yerevan State University (YSU) lecturer Karlen Khachatryan on his Facebook page. He specifically noted:

“When some university officials protested, they said we misunderstood; the purpose is noble, we will have an academic city like no other in the world, and so on. Moreover, we were accused of spreading fake news.

Now the most shocking part: in response to an inquiry from the ‘Human Rights Defender’ NGO, the deputy chairman of the State Property Management Committee of Armenia confirms that the issue of selling the well-known ‘BLACK BUILDING’ of YSU, which has cultural and historical significance, located on Abovyan Street, is in the discussion phase.

Can you imagine, people are discussing the proposal to turn the YSU building into a hotel?

Now it is at least clear, isn’t it, why there has been a management crisis at YSU, why the university has been without an elected rector for more than two years, why there is no board of trustees, and why after failing to appoint their candidate as the president of the board, not only was the board dissolved, but also an unlawful process was initiated to disproportionately reduce the number of university representatives in the board.

Once again, I reaffirm my and many devoted university members’ stance: A UNIVERSITY IS NOT A HEADLESS CHICKEN; PEOPLE CAN’T DO AS THEY PLEASE.”
