Armenia Acquires Twice as Much Weaponry: SIPRI

Armenia Acquires Twice as Much Weaponry: SIPRI

According to the publication of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), during the period from 2011 to 2020, Azerbaijan imported $3.274 billion worth of weapons, while Armenia imported only $398 million.

According to the center, the majority of Armenia's imports took place after 2018, with 2019 being a particularly significant year. In that year alone, Yerevan imported $248 million worth of weapons, which accounts for 62.3% of the total imports over the past decade.

Of course, immediately after obtaining this data, the government propaganda machine flooded the narrative with the thesis that the Armenian authorities have done the maximum to enhance military supplies since the revolution. However, the efforts made were not sufficient to compensate for the deficiencies and wastages of the preceding decades. On the other hand, sources close to the military during the previous administrations claimed that these figures do not accurately reflect reality.

The opposition and governing factions may continue to dispute who has done more for the military and the country’s security. Even if the figures presented by the International Peace Research Institute are true, it remains a fact that the Azerbaijani army is better armed, while our troops faced issues even with basic communication equipment and bulletproof vests.
