Four Armenian Boxers Lose at Paris Qualification Tournament
In the ongoing Olympic boxing qualification tournament in Paris, four representatives from Armenia stepped into the ring today. In the 63 kg category, Hovhannes Bachkov faced Russian boxer Gabi Mamedov, who was awarded a controversial victory. Bachkov sustained a cut above his eye in the first round, which the referees counted as a hit from Mamedov, resulting in Mamedov's win. However, the cut was actually caused by a head clash with Mamedov. As a result, Mamedov earned an Olympic berth.
Nevertheless, Bachkov is likely to secure a spot for the Tokyo Games, as he remains among the leaders in the European qualification rankings.
Among our other representatives, Ani Hovsepyan in the 69 kg category fought against Turkish boxer and 2019 world champion Busenaz Sürmeneli but suffered a defeat. Narek Manasyan in the 91 kg category also faced a loss, as he narrowly lost 3-2 to British boxer Cheavon Clarke. Super heavyweight Gurgen Hovhannisyan was also defeated.
Today, June 6, 75 kg boxer Arman Darchinyan will step into the ring. If he wins, Darchinyan will secure an Olympic ticket.
