Boxer Arman Darchinyan Secures Olympic Qualification
In the ongoing boxing Olympic qualifying tournament in Paris, Armenian representative Arman Darchinyan has secured a ticket to the Tokyo Olympic Games. In the 1/8 finals of the 75 kg category, Darchinyan defeated Georgian boxer Giorgi Kharabadze by points.
This was Darchinyan's first bout in the qualifying tournament. He was initially set to start on June 4 in the 1/16 finals, but his opponent, Ireland’s Micheal Nevin, did not arrive in Paris, resulting in a victory being awarded to the Armenian fighter.
On June 6, Ani Hovsepyan will also compete in the ring. Other Armenian representatives have been eliminated from the tournament.
Arman Darchinyan is the 10th Olympian from Armenia for the Tokyo 2020 Games. Prior to this, Armenia had secured 9 Olympic berths: four in Greco-Roman wrestling (Armen Melikyan, 60 kg; Karen Aslanyan, 67 kg; Karapet Chalyan, 77 kg; Artur Aleksanyan, 97 kg), two in freestyle wrestling (Arsen Harutyunyan, 57 kg; Vazgen Tevanian, 65 kg), and one each in artistic gymnastics (Artur Davtyan), boxing (Koryun Soghomonyan, 52 kg), and triple jump (Levon Aghasyan).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were postponed by a year and will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
