Azerbaijan Slowing Down Construction of Highway Connecting to Nakhichevan, Says Nairi Hoxhikyan
Azerbaijan is slowing down the construction of the highway connecting to Nakhichevan, Nairi Hoxhikyan, an expert on interethnic conflicts, wrote on his Facebook page. He stated, “Azerbaijan is slowing down the construction of the highway connecting to Nakhichevan, planning to complete it by autumn 2023.
Previously, the President of Azerbaijan had announced that they would be able to put the Horadiz-Mijnavan-Aghbend road into operation by autumn 2021, which would connect with the road to Meghri in Armenia and reach Nakhichevan. It is currently difficult to say why they have decided to slow down the construction of this 114 km road that passes through the southern region of Artsakh and almost completely flat areas, and what it has to do with regional tensions and especially possible aggression towards Iran.
In any case, Azerbaijan is no longer in a rush to connect with Nakhichevan via land. This situation carries both positive and negative implications, which we will be able to understand in the coming months.
