20 New Passenger Cars Are Coming to Armenia
Twenty new passenger cars produced by a factory in Tver will be sent to Armenia. On May 25, the handover of the cars took place at the mentioned factory to the 'South Caucasus Railway' company. The shipment includes 11 compartment cars, 6 open-plan cars, and 3 SV cars, already on their way to Armenia. An additional 7 cars are expected to be delivered by the end of June. This information was reported by the press service of the South Caucasus Railway.
Attending the event were Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexey Overchuk, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Development Bank Nikolay Podguzov, Acting Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Mher Grigoryan, and General Director - Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways Oleg Belozyorov.
'This program gives a significant boost to the development of the transport infrastructure and economy of the entire South Caucasus region, and also accelerates our bilateral and multilateral trade and economic ties. The normalization of the situation in the region will require reliable rail connections, which are necessary for the full realization of Armenia's economic potential and the integration of all the advantages of the Eurasian Economic Union countries,' said Alexey Overchuk.
He assured that efforts are being made to ensure that passenger transport in Armenia meets the highest demands and standards and is comfortable.
'Russian Railways has invested more than $300 million in Armenia's infrastructure, and we are gradually fulfilling all our obligations. This year, almost the entire passenger rolling stock of the 'South Caucasus Railway' will be renewed,' said Oleg Belozyorov, head of Russian Railways.
According to Alexey Melnikov, General Director of the South Caucasus Railway, the new rolling stock will play an important role in the development of passenger transport in Armenia. 'The rolling stock is the most modern and is designed for all categories of travelers. Considering the resumption of international passenger transport between Armenia and Georgia in June, which had not operated for more than a year due to the pandemic, this is a great gift for Armenian citizens and guests before the start of the holiday season,' noted Alexey Melnikov.
The new rolling stock is the state-of-the-art serial production from the Tver Car Factory, which is part of Transmashholding. The cars will allow for the organization of service areas equipped with vending machines and coffee machines. The cars are fitted with restroom facilities, shower cabins, and drinking water purifiers. All passenger car seats are equipped with electrical outlets or USB connectors. Television sets will be installed in the double compartment cars of model 61-4517. A special color scheme was applied to the cars according to the wishes of the South Caucasus Railway.
