Mandatory Military Serviceman Shoots Himself in the Head with AKM-Type Rifle; Criminal Case Initiated

On May 24, 2021, at approximately 5:45 PM, in the barracks of the Armenian Ministry of Defense’s military unit, mandatory military serviceman Mkrtych Hovhannes Hovhannisyan discharged a firearm, shooting himself in the head with an AKM-type rifle, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound.

In connection with the incident, the Military Investigative Department of the Armenian Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 360.1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (Causing a serviceman’s death through negligence). An investigation is currently underway.

Necessary investigative and procedural actions are being undertaken to ensure a comprehensive, complete, and objective examination of the case.
