Teacher Killed in Kazan Attempted to Shield Student with Her Body

During the mass shooting at a gymnasium in Kazan, the teacher who lost her life attempted to shield one of her students with her body from bullets. This was reported by TASS, citing witnesses to the attack on the school.

According to preliminary data, Elvira Ignatieva tried to save one of the students, as stated by witnesses of the tragedy. She moved the child away from the shooter and stood in his way, effectively covering the child with her own body. The wound sustained by Ignatieva turned out to be fatal.

The 26-year-old Elvira Ignatieva had taught at School No. 175 for four years. In 2018, she placed second in the “Teacher of the Year” competition. She began working at the school in the same year that Ilnaz Galiyev, the suspect in the shooting, graduated from the ninth grade. However, it is known that the deceased Ignatieva did not teach Galiyev.

It is recalled that on the morning of May 11, 19-year-old Ilnaz Galiyev entered School No. 175 armed with a hunting rifle. The young man had graduated from this educational institution four years ago, completing the ninth grade. Galiyev obtained a permit to carry a weapon, purchased a gun, and attacked the school. The attack resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including eight children and two teachers. Eighteen students are currently hospitalized with gunshot wounds, fractures, and bruises, with some of the victims having jumped out of school windows to escape the shooter.
