The Information Documented by the Ombudsman is Crucial for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Utilize: Edmon Marukyan

Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the 'Enlightened Armenia' faction in the National Assembly, believes that Armenia is a unique country where the Ombudsman confronts a reality that no other Ombudsman in the world has faced: not only to protect human rights due to the actions of a neighboring state but also to make documented evidence of war crimes subject to international investigation.

"In this sense, I think the Ombudsman’s actions are excellent, and the parliament must support the institution of the Ombudsman, because we see through this experience that the Ombudsman has reached a level that is the subject of international scrutiny. Moreover, the activities of the Ombudsman’s institution are also important in foreign policy. As a delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, I use the Ombudsman’s reports to organize my activities in the monitoring committee. And this is valued as impartial information produced by a high-level Ombudsman. Various delegates tell me that we have a very good defender," the MP stated.

He noted that he is impressed with the Ombudsman’s work, which has opened the opportunity to document everything against Azerbaijan's atrocities and to be consistent in holding Azerbaijan accountable for war crimes.

"It is very important for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to utilize the information documented by the Ombudsman. Additionally, we should expect from our Ombudsman everything that he is responsible for and has the authority to do. In horizontal relations, the Ombudsman has no role; his activities are related to state-human relationships," Edmon Marukyan concluded.
