Princess Diana's Bicycle Sold at Auction for Over $61,000
The bicycle of Princess Diana of Wales has been sold at auction for more than $61,000. The Raleigh Traveller bicycle was sold last week at an auction organized by Burstow & Hewett, fetching double the expected price, as reported by the Daily Star.
It is known that Princess Diana used to ride this bicycle to her workplace at a London nursery every day before marrying Prince Charles in 1981. In 2018, the same bicycle was sold at auction for nearly $13,000, while this time the auction house anticipated it would sell for between $20,000 and $28,000.
Famous auctioneer Mark Ellin described it as “the world’s most famous bicycle.” Meanwhile, Burstow and Hewett auction house referred to it as “the bicycle of shame, a symbol of pressures faced by Princess Diana in the royal family.” It is said that palace officials directed Princess Diana to dispose of her old bicycle after her marriage to Prince Charles.
It has been noted that the bicycle was acquired by prominent attorney Barry Glazer from Maryland.
