National Assembly Fails to Elect Nikol Pashinyan as Prime Minister, Paving the Way for Snap Elections
As a result of the voting held in the National Assembly, Nikol Pashinyan was not elected as Prime Minister of Armenia, thereby ensuring the possibility of holding snap parliamentary elections in the country. The vote on the issue received 1 ‘for’, 3 ‘against’, and 75 ‘abstentions’ votes.
Nikol Pashinyan’s candidacy was proposed by the ruling ‘My Step’ faction, whose member Alen Simonyan announced that they would vote ‘abstain’. The Prosperous Armenia faction did not participate in the special session of the National Assembly.
It is noteworthy that on April 25, Nikol Pashinyan submitted his resignation from the position of Prime Minister to organize snap parliamentary elections following the dissolution of the parliament. According to the Constitution of Armenia, if a Prime Minister is not elected twice in the parliament, the National Assembly is dissolved. The ‘My Step’ faction had stated that they proposed Nikol Pashinyan’s candidacy following this procedure.
After meetings with the leaders of the Prosperous Armenia and Bright Armenia factions, Nikol Pashinyan announced that snap parliamentary elections would be held on June 20.
