President Armen Sarkissian Sends Letter to ICRC President for the Return of Prisoners
The President of the Republic of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, has sent a letter to the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, requesting the committee's assistance in the swift return of Armenian military captives and civilians held by Azerbaijan. This was reported by the President's office.
In his letter, President Sarkissian particularly emphasized that during the war unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh with the active support and direct involvement of Turkey, several hundred Armenian servicemen and civilians were captured, who are subjected to torture and inhumane treatment by Azerbaijan.
“Addressing the humanitarian situation in Artsakh is a priority, and urgent attention is needed from the international community. The international community, all countries of the OSCE Minsk Group, international organizations, and individuals must provide an appropriate assessment of Azerbaijan's actions. According to the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020, on the ceasefire, Armenia has transferred all military captives to Azerbaijan. However, it is extremely important that the exchange of all captured military personnel and civilians is conducted on the principle of 'all for all', which is currently being disregarded by Azerbaijan. In gross violation of human rights and international humanitarian law, Azerbaijan is hiding the actual number of Armenian prisoners and hostages and continues to deny and obstruct the return of captured civilians and military personnel,” President Sarkissian emphasized.
“Armenia expects support from international partners regarding the prompt return of all captives. I appeal to you and the International Committee of the Red Cross to undertake all necessary measures in accordance with international humanitarian law to ensure the immediate release and safe return of the prisoners,” he added.
