Mirzoyan Signs Amendments to Electoral Code, Majoritarian Electoral System Abolished

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ararat Mirzoyan, has signed amendments to the constitutional law on the 'Electoral Code of the Republic of Armenia.' This was reported by the press service of the National Assembly.

On April 1, the National Assembly adopted the bill on amendments and additions to the 'Electoral Code of the Republic of Armenia,' which abolished the majoritarian electoral system. According to the bill, elections will be conducted through a proportional representation system.

It is noteworthy that on April 17, President Armen Sarkissian announced that he would not sign the law but would not appeal to the Constitutional Court to determine its constitutionality.

"The President discussed the law with the leaders of several parties, political figures, and a representative of the Central Electoral Commission, listening to their opinions and comments. Studies conducted by the President's Office concluded that from a constitutional perspective, the law is not evidently problematic," the President stated.
