Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry Calls on Regional Countries to Join Efforts to Shut Down Metsamor NPP
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for a joint effort to shut down the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in a message issued on the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. According to minval.az, the statement from the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry emphasizes:
“The large-scale consequences of the Chernobyl disaster have proven that the safety of nuclear power plants should be a concern not only for the countries hosting these facilities but also for surrounding nations that might be affected by potential risks. In this context, the risks associated with the Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia should be thoroughly examined by the international community. This NPP was constructed using the same technology applied in Chernobyl between 1976 and 1980, and it is located in an active seismic zone. Its outdated technology and location classify Metsamor among the most dangerous nuclear power plants in the world.”
