Yerevan State University Acting Rector Gegham Gevorgyan to Resign on May 17 as Crisis Deepens

The acting rector of Yerevan State University (YSU), Gegham Gevorgyan, has decided to resign on May 17. He announced this during a session of the YSU Scientific Council today, stating that his resignation letter will be sent to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports.

It is worth noting that YSU has been unable to elect a rector for about two years now. According to Armen Avetisyan, the head of the YSU trade union, the authorities are deliberately exacerbating the crisis at the university to ultimately appoint their preferred rector.

“It is evident that the YSU council is not only unable to elect a rector but is also deliberately sabotaging the election under the guidance of the authorities to eventually appoint their desired rector. In short, just as there is chaos throughout the country, so too is there at the university,” he told 24News.
