Major Detained After Accepting Bribe of 600,000 Dram: Police

Based on operational information received at the Jermuk division of the Police, measures were taken leading to a report submitted to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Directorate of the Ministry of Defense on April 13. It was reported that a citizen, whose military deferment had expired back in 2016, was being demanded a bribe of 600,000 dram by the head of the territorial subdivision of the military recruitment service of the Vayots Dzor region. This sum was required for not conducting additional medical commission examinations, making the necessary annotations in the military booklet, stamping the military booklet, and definitively resolving the issue of conscription.

This bribe was to be handed over on April 13 or 14. As a result of joint operational-investigative measures conducted by officers from the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Directorate and the Vayots Dzor regional departments, the head of the aforementioned subdivision was detained on April 14 at the moment he received the 600,000 dram bribe at the military recruitment office. A search of his vehicle revealed the 600,000 dram.

A criminal case has been initiated. The detained individual, who holds the rank of major, has been arrested.

Notice: The suspected or accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the procedural law established by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia, with a legally valid court decision.
