April Weather Forecast

April Weather Forecast

In April, the sun's altitude continues to increase, leading to longer daylight hours. However, the duration of sunshine is only around 40-50%, which is attributed to significant cloud cover observed during this month. The average air temperature for the month across the republic is +4.7⁰C, while the average temperature for the third decade reaches +6⁰C.

The coldest period is the first decade of the month, with an average temperature of +2.7⁰C (negative temperatures are still recorded in the high mountainous areas). By mid-April, areas above 2000 meters experience a daily average temperature exceeding 0⁰C, which marks the end of winter, and in warmer regions, the daily average temperature surpasses 10⁰C.

During the first decade of April, the temperature variations are significant: the average temperature in Gegharkunik, Kotayk, Shirak, and the mountainous regions of Aragatsotn is +2.5…+3.0⁰C, while in Lori and Tavush it ranges from +7…+8⁰C, and in the Ararat Plain and Syunik valleys, it reaches +10…+12⁰C. In the second decade, the average temperature is +1.5…+2.0⁰C higher than in the first decade, but in mountainous regions, temperatures can still drop to -15…-20⁰C. The average temperature for the third decade is +6.6⁰C.

The average maximum temperatures recorded are in Shirak at +17…+20⁰C, in Lori at +20…+24⁰C, in Tavush at +20…+25⁰C, in Gegharkunik at +13…+17⁰C, in the Ararat Plain at +25…26⁰C, and in Syunik at +23…+29⁰C. The absolute maximum temperature recorded in April 2008 reached +35…+36⁰C in the Syunik valleys and +33…+35⁰C in the Ararat Plain, with Tavush reaching +29…+30⁰C (Bagratashen at 32…34⁰C).

Negative temperatures recorded in valley regions during the first decade of April are considered frost, which poses a significant risk to agriculture as fruit trees begin to bloom and agricultural crops (such as grains, potatoes, etc.) are sown and planted. On the night of April 5, 2004, the recorded minimum temperatures were among the lowest ever recorded for April, with -16...-21⁰C in mountainous regions (down to -23⁰C in Masrik), -11...-16⁰C in Lori, -5...-10⁰C in Tavush, Ararat Plain, and Syunik foothills, and -2...-4⁰C in Syunik valleys.

In April, the average amount of precipitation is 77 mm, accounting for 12% of the annual total. The highest levels of precipitation are found in mountainous regions (Amberd, Garnhovit, Semyonovka) at 100 mm, and Aragatsotn, Kotayk, and Syunik valleys receive between 60-80 mm. Comparatively lower precipitation is observed in the Ararat Plain, ranging from 30-50 mm. This amount is distributed fairly evenly throughout the month, with 10-15 rainy days expected. In high mountainous areas (above 2000 meters), precipitation is seen in the form of snow or wet snow.

Heavy precipitation was recorded in 1963, 1978, 1984, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011 (doubling or tripling monthly norms). Dry years were noted in 1943, 1950, 1970, 1983, 2008, and 2012, where precipitation reached only 1% of the monthly norm in the Ararat Plain. Generally, April sees the disappearance of snow cover, except for high mountainous areas. Within each ten-year period, 1-2 days of snow can fall in valley regions. The relative humidity in April is relatively high at 60-75%, dropping to 55-60% in the Ararat Plain.

Thunderstorm activity intensifies in April, and hail can rarely occur. On average, days with thunderstorms total around 3-5 days.
