Game Rules to be Clarified: Two Independents Align with 'My Step'
Today, the Parliament will hold an extraordinary session at the initiative of the ruling team, with a draft on amendments to the Electoral Code on the agenda. The discussion will take place in a 24-hour format, which means it will become clear within a day how the snap elections will be conducted.
According to our sources within the government, apart from abandoning the majoritarian system, there are attempts to change the threshold for parties and alliances as well. For parties, it is proposed to lower the threshold to 4 percent, while for alliances, an increase by 1 percent to 8 percent is suggested.
It is also possible that extensive amendments to the legislation will be adopted in the coming month, under the condition that they would take effect from 2022.
The government is awaiting the opinion of the Venice Commission, which, according to some reports, is expected to arrive after April 20. One more note: although Pashinyan announced that the Electoral Code is being amended at the suggestion of 'My Step', the project was authored by Hamazasp Danielyan from 'My Step' and independent deputies Arman Babajanyan and Sergey Bagratyan. Additionally, securing 80 votes is necessary for the project to pass.
