Depriving Citizens of the Opportunity to Elect Their Representative in the National Assembly Will Have Negative Consequences, MP Says

“Luminous Armenia” argues that a fully proportional electoral system is beneficial for Armenia. They are convinced that this promotes democracy, the formation of political elites by citizens, and the establishment of political parties.

“Depriving citizens of the opportunity to elect their representative in the National Assembly will have negative consequences. We will end up with a parliament of mere button-pushers. Therefore, we propose an open proportional list, and as a result of discussions, we have also made certain concessions from our initial proposal, trying to find some consensus version that could also be acceptable to the majority,” said Gevorg Gorgisyan, the secretary of the Luminous Armenia faction, in the parliament.
