Thousands Want to Leave for the USA or Russia. Armenian President on Expected Emigration

The President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, stated in an interview with aravot.am that emigration could reach crisis proportions in Armenia. "We are also facing a moral and psychological crisis, which is very profound. We feel this depth in the indifference of thousands of people towards political processes. If in 2018 we could see 100,000 to 300,000 citizens, especially the youth, in the streets, today I sadly hear that thousands are thinking about buying tickets to move to Russia or obtaining a visa for the USA," the president commented.

According to him, those who were once proud to be Armenian and felt involved in Armenian issues have become colder, more evasive, and cautious. "If 6-7 months ago we were a people who survived the Genocide and had emerged victorious from the First Artsakh War, after the second war in Artsakh, many are now asking the question — who are we? The second part of the emigration issue is the emigration within the Diaspora itself. In other words, people who were once proud to be Armenian and felt involved in Armenian issues have grown more distant, evasive, and cautious. This carries deep dangers," he added.

He believes that we need clear discipline—both in public service and among businesspeople and in all types of services, as well as an awareness that much depends on discipline. "Unfortunately, we do not even see that discipline in the public service sector. The state has numerous obligations. These also include social responsibilities. Citizens also have obligations to the state and government to ensure both the security and borders of the Republic of Armenia, as well as safety in general," he stated.

He mentioned that Armenia, being in extremely difficult conditions, is not the most attractive country in the world for potential investments. The very idea of investing here has become problematic for many, particularly in the aftermath of war. "Therefore, each of us will need new approaches and solutions that are not typical, and of course, disciplined, daily hard work to make Armenia appealing again to investors. This is a case where both the government, the public, and the National Assembly must find unconventional solutions starting from tax incentives that will encourage investment. I am confident that it is possible based on my personal experience," Sarkissian expressed.

According to the Armenian president, there are countries and companies that would be willing to invest in Armenia. The country must do everything to ensure that investors feel they have come to the right place.
