Biden's Recognition of the Armenian Genocide Will Be a Correction of a Historical Mistake: Jerusalem Post

According to reports, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Joe Biden's administration will be a long-awaited decision in U.S. history. An extensive article on the Armenian Genocide has been published in the Jewish newspaper Jerusalem Post.

The refusal and failure of Israel and many other countries to recognize the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by Ottoman Turks against Armenian Christians in 1915, is morally inexcusable. The publication notes that the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide was only adopted in the United States in 2019. It is also anticipated that the U.S. president will acknowledge it as well.

Jerusalem Post emphasizes that many historians view the Armenian Genocide as a precursor to the Holocaust, and the lack of its recognition is often cited as evidence for why commemoration of the Holocaust is crucial in preventing future genocides. Despite the numerous documents and eyewitness testimonies regarding the genocide, contradictions exist around its recognition due to Turkey's outright denial of responsibility for the massacre.

Regarding Israel, the government of the Jewish state has refused to recognize the Armenian Genocide due to its unstable yet strategic political relations with Turkey. For decades, Turkey has blackmailed and threatened nations that even contemplate recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Initially, this was something Israel could not afford politically. For Israel, Turkey is the only Muslim state with which it has cooperative and diplomatic relations.

Over the decades, Turkey's hostility towards Israel has grown under the authoritarian and Islamist regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. However, the issue is not just that. The geopolitical relations between Turkey and Iran are on the rise.

Instead of recognizing the Armenian Genocide and undoubtedly standing on the right side of history, the Israeli government has sold out the Armenian people by supplying arms to Azerbaijan, which have been used to bomb Armenian cities.

In addressing the U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the publication notes that this month, the White House announced Biden's administration was preparing to acknowledge it. The author emphasizes that the Armenian Genocide is not merely a horrifying event; it represents the most horrific genocide of that time worldwide, occurring not in the context of war but simply because Armenians are Christians.
