Armenian Security Council Secretary Avoids Answer on Whether Turkey is an Enemy State

In general, the unblocking should not only be with Azerbaijan but a broader regional approach is necessary, and we believe that there are opportunities for that at this moment.

This was stated by the Secretary of the Armenian Security Council, Armen Grigoryan, during an interview with Petros Ghazaryan on Public Television, evading a direct answer to the question of whether Turkey is considered an enemy state in our security concept.

"There are broader formulations in the strategy, but significant changes have taken place in the region after the second Nagorno-Karabakh war, and the process of unblocking has begun since November 9, which entered a more intensive phase within the framework of the document announced on January 11 by the leaders of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan. Overall, the unblocking should not only be with Azerbaijan, but also a broader regional approach must be adopted, and we believe that there are opportunities for that at this moment," he said.

When asked what leads him to believe that those opportunities exist, he mentioned that while there is no direct dialogue, public statements have been made by senior officials of both countries, indicating the potential for dialogue.

In response to Ghazaryan's question on whether he considers Turkey an enemy state, the Secretary of the Security Council said: "Look, I said that many things have changed in the region. We were just discussing that there is a possibility for the unblocking of the overall region... If we are moving towards the unblocking of the region, then there must be certain adjustments in our approaches." When further asked if Turkey is not considered an enemy state, the Secretary replied: "It would be wrong to firmly claim that there is no threat from Turkey, but the ongoing actions in the region provide other possibilities."
