Increase in Suicides Recorded in Artsakh

In March of this year, the Artsakh Republic's Prosecutor's Office studied the cases of suicides and suicide attempts recorded over the past five years. The analysis conducted has shown that there is an increase in such cases during the second and last quarters of the year, with particularly concerning activity observed among individuals with mental health issues.

“This month has already been marked by an increase in the number of such cases, which is alarming. However, while in previous years it was merely a presumed statistic, now it encompasses other concerns beyond regular statistics. The recent war in Artsakh has brought numerous calamities, which, aside from claiming and destroying human lives, have also had a serious impact on people's mental health. Society and individuals have become more emotional, irritable, and sensitive, with feelings often linked to the urgency of decision-making regarding various issues or problems, frequently carrying irrevocable consequences.

In this regard, the work of a group of psychologists with the post-war society holds considerable importance. This initiative was launched by the Ministry of Health of the Artsakh Republic and a group of foreign volunteer psychologists. However, the regularly recorded cases and events indicate the need to expand these efforts, reassess the prioritization of beneficiaries, and organize individual work.

From the perspective of effectively solving the presented issue, the role of each of us is crucial, as well as active participation in addressing the problem. We should not remain indifferent to our compatriots who have found themselves in a state of mental instability for various reasons, who express self-harming or other harmful thoughts, or who exhibit drastic behavioral changes. We are obligated to take sufficient measures to employ all available inpatient and outpatient psychological support resources. We must also show the same enthusiasm and care towards individuals suffering from mental illnesses or temporary pathological mental disorders by providing proper medical supervision and treatment through counseling, encouragement, or other legal means,” stated the message from the Prosecutor's Office of the Artsakh Republic.
