Frost Risks Increased, But That Does Not Mean Frost Occurrences in Armenia, Surenyans Says

This year, the risks of frost for agricultural crops and fruit trees are slightly higher, but this does not mean that frost will occur in Armenia. This was stated by Gagik Surenyan, Deputy Director of the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center of the Ministry of Environment, during a press conference held today.

According to him, it has already been observed that apricot trees have begun to bloom. Mass blooming of apricot trees will take place in the Ararat Plain before March 25.

“In this case, the cold expected in the coming days may have a certain effect on the apricot trees, but it will not cause particularly significant damage. Our experience has shown that -1 degree does not significantly affect the apricot tree,” said Surenyan.

Surenyan recalled that last year, the weather was much more stable, and the penetration of cold currents was less than now.

The Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center will inform the public in advance about the risk of frost.

Earlier, it was reported that another powerful cyclone would penetrate into Armenia this evening. This cyclone will operate in our region until March 25 inclusive. Rainfall is expected in all regions, in higher mountainous areas in the form of snow, and in foothills and valley zones in the form of rain. In some areas (Aragatsotn, Kotayk), intense rainfall is expected tomorrow, accompanied by thunderstorms, and wind intensification at a speed of 20-25 m/s.

It is possible that from March 28, the weather will clear up, but nighttime temperatures will drop. According to forecasts, the temperature in the Ararat Plain will approach -1 to -2 degrees.
