The Authorities are Rushing: Why Didn't They Wait for the Venice Commission's Opinion?

«Although the 'My Step' faction of the National Assembly has been discussing the draft law on amendments to the Electoral Code since March 9, 'Zhoghovurd' daily has learned that the authorities do not yet have the Venice Commission's opinion at this time.

In fact, the ruling faction has once again not waited for a conclusion from the professional commission, considering the opinion of this authoritative institution as merely consultative and deciding to make such serious changes without waiting for their input.

However, it is no secret that the Venice Commission opposes holding snap elections too soon after changes to the Electoral Code or the Constitution, suggesting that at least a six-month waiting period should be observed.

Perhaps this is why the authorities have decided not to wait for the conclusion this time and have put the package into circulation, discussing it in parliament without that input.

It should be noted that the proposed changes are significant; the electoral system must change, the threshold for parties and alliances, the election deposit, and so on. It is worth adding that the draft was developed by the 'My Step' faction itself,” reports 'Zhoghovurd' daily.
