SSecurity Service Checks Passports of Travelers on M2 Highway from Syunik to Yerevan
On the M2 interstate highway section from Meghri to Yerevan, in the area of Goris–Vorotan–Shurnukh, the passports of all passengers in vehicles coming from Kapan are being checked by staff members of Armenia's National Security Service before reaching Goris.
It is important to note that after the trilateral ceasefire agreement on November 9, 2020, certain areas in Syunik province came under Azerbaijani control. In addition to Russian and Armenian border troops, Azerbaijani forces have also been positioned in these territories.
According to our sources, the passenger checks are being conducted with the aim of ensuring that no Azerbaijani accidentally crosses into Armenian territory. “But there should also be a post set up in Karmirakharch to check the documents of those traveling to Kapan. Why exclude that Azerbaijani forces can't infiltrate our territories from the Chayzami area?” commented a driver of one of the taxi services operating on the Yerevan-Kapan route, who preferred to remain anonymous.
Additionally, Armenian Parliament member from the “My Step” faction, Armen Khachatryan, insisted in a conversation with reporters that, so far, there has been no “citizen security issue in Syunik, and no citizens have suffered harm from Azerbaijanis.”
