The Search for Gevorg Kostanyan Continues, Says Prosecutor General’s Office
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia has issued a clarification regarding the search warrant for Gevorg Kostanyan, a former prosecutor and accused in the criminal case related to the events of March 1.
“Today, Deputy Taguhi Tovmasyan has, in a distorted manner, attempted to present information diverting from reality under the guise of a ‘scandal,’ publicly misrepresenting the circumstances related to a specific case within the framework of international organizations, exploiting the lack of public awareness on the subject,” the statement reads.
According to the clarification, “In accordance with the Constitution of Interpol, it is not an authority responsible for criminal justice, as emphasized, likely due to the unawareness of the mentioned deputy. This organization does not investigate case circumstances or facts, does not have the authority to provide assessments regarding the substantiation or legality of the accusation, nor does it verify the details.”
It further explains that, under Article 2 of Interpol’s Constitution, its purpose is to ensure and develop collaboration among all criminal police authorities, which effectively contribute to the prevention of criminal offenses and the conduct of their combat.
Consequently, an acknowledgment regarding the political nature of prosecution, as claimed by some, is presented as unfounded and subjective, according to the Prosecutor’s statement.
It is also highlighted that Gevorg Kostanyan’s accusation has been assessed three times by the Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan and has been upheld by appellate courts, confirming the legality and justifications of the decisions made.
The report concludes by stating that the search for Gevorg Kostanyan is ongoing.
