Citizen Posing as Soldier's Father Steals Money: Armenian Police

On February 26, a businessman reported to the Yeghvard Police Department that a man identifying himself as Arthur Aslanyan had deceitfully stolen 130,000 AMD from him using a payment terminal. The man claimed that his son was a soldier and urgently needed money to help him, promising to return it soon.

Upon receiving the report, the police in Yeghvard collaborated with the officers of the main department of criminal police. It soon became evident that the Yeghvard resident was not the only victim of this scheme. The man, posing as a journalist and a courier, had contacted individuals operating in various regions of the republic and had stolen money from them under nearly identical pretenses.

Moreover, law enforcement officials uncovered his real identity and confirmed that the 31-year-old suspect had been wanted by the Shengavit Police Department since 2020 on charges of committing fraud.

On March 13, officers from the main department of criminal police, acting on the operational information received, located the wanted individual on Aram Khachaturyan Street in Artashat and detained him for questioning at the Yeghvard Police Department. Law enforcement has strong suspicions that other citizens may have fallen victim to the criminal acts of the man posing as Arthur Aslanyan. Those affected are encouraged to contact their nearest police station or call 1-02.

The investigation is ongoing.
