Lavrov and Cavusoglu Meet in Qatar
On Wednesday evening, the foreign ministers of Russia and Turkey, Sergey Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu, met at Doha airport. The Russian minister arrived first from Riyadh, while the Turkish minister came from Bishkek. This was reported by the newspaper "Kommersant."
“Where is my gift from Bishkek?” joked Sergey Lavrov while shaking hands with Mevlut Cavusoglu. In response, the latter remarked, “It seems that the entire Russian delegation has already been vaccinated.”
Starting the negotiations, Sergey Lavrov noted that earlier that day, the presidents of the two countries had participated via video conference in the ceremony for pouring concrete for the third block of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey. Mevlut Cavusoglu lamented that due to his flight, he was only able to watch a small part of the broadcast.
On Thursday, both ministers are set to meet with Qatar's counterpart, Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, for trilateral talks. The main topic of the meeting will be Syria. Doha has long suggested this format to Moscow, which could complement other platforms discussing the Syrian issue. Whether it will become a permanent mechanism remains unclear. Arab countries hope to be able to participate more actively in resolving the Syrian question in the future.
