Armenia Imports Large Quantities of Tomatoes and Cucumbers from Turkey
Armenia has imported a significant amount of tomatoes and cucumbers from Turkey. According to the newspaper 'Hayots Ashkharh', the Armenian State Revenue Committee has reported that during the past year, 1,732,400 tons of tomatoes entered Armenia from Turkey, whereas in 2019, the country imported 2,893,100 tons.
Additionally, some tomatoes have also been imported from Iran, amounting to 241 tons. Aside from this, cucumbers from the Islamic Republic of Iran were imported in the previous year, totaling 1,913,000 tons. 'Hayots Ashkharh' further clarified that apricots have been imported into Armenia not only from Iran and Georgia but also from Turkey. For instance, 2,045 tons of Turkish apricots were imported last year. According to the State Revenue Committee of Armenia, 2,726 tons of apricots were imported from Iran, and 7,528 tons from Georgia.
It is worth noting that the imports of tomatoes and cucumbers from Turkish and Iranian origins severely impact local production. Since the imported tomatoes and cucumbers are sold at quite low prices in the market and supermarkets, Armenian producers are suffering. Farmers take loans and incur serious expenses, heating greenhouses in winter to grow tomatoes and other crops, while several companies importing unknown quality tomatoes and cucumbers from abroad are pushing local producers out of the market, impoverishing them while generating substantial profits for themselves.
