Charges Filed Against Onik Gasparyan's Deputy

According to the newspaper «Zhoghvoroud», Andranik Makaryan, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, has been involved as an accused party in a criminal case investigated by the Military Investigative Main Office of the RA Investigative Committee.

This was reported in response to an inquiry by the «Zhoghvoroud» newspaper from the Public Relations Department of the RA Prosecutor General's Office. Specifically, the inquiry requested information about the existence of a criminal case related to the 44-day war, what exactly the case pertains to, and based on what characteristics of the RA Criminal Code it was initiated. The inquiry also sought to determine whether Andranik Makaryan had been questioned in relation to this case and in what capacity.

The only response received was that Makaryan is involved in the case as an accused party. The Prosecutor’s Office has refused to provide any further information regarding the case, considering it a pre-investigation secret.

It is noteworthy that Andranik Makaryan is one of the four military officials who did not join the statement made by Chief of Staff Onik Gasparyan and other military personnel demanding the resignation of Nikol Pashinyan. Consequently, Makaryan has reason to be concerned.

ArmLur.am reported that a criminal case has been opened regarding the actions of Andranik Makaryan, specifically connected to the 44-day war, and it remains to be seen what specific shortcomings his department may have committed. This criminal case is the reason Makaryan has refused to sign the statement of his colleagues, fearing disclosures about himself and the possibility of detention.

Interestingly, Andranik Makaryan was present yesterday at the Yerablur military pantheon with representatives of the government and RA Minister of Defense Vagharshak Harutyunyan. He hopes that after the dismissal of Onik Gasparyan, he will be appointed as Chief of the General Staff and that the criminal case against him will also be closed.
