Armenians Urge Putin to Prevent Azerbaijan from Poisoning Water Flowing to Armenia and Artsakh

Armenians are raising alarms about the risk of poisoning at the Karvachar water intake station, which has come under Azerbaijani control following the 44-day war in 2020. This was reported by Инфотека24.

Armenian refugees have addressed an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to impose monitoring on the quality of water entering Armenia and Artsakh, as the consequences could lead to the destruction of Armenia’s entire population.

The letter reads:

“Dear Mr. President, our letter to you is prompted by issues of critical importance regarding security for the Armenian side, in view of the situation created in the region after the autumn war of 2020. The Karvachar water intake station has come under Azerbaijani control after the last Armenian left Karvachar under threat of extermination. Until the second half of the 1930s, this area comprised about 250 square kilometers and was part of Soviet Armenia. During the Soviet years, the Azerbaijani side was allowed to use this area as pasture without any state decision.

The Karvachar water intake station is a water donor for Armenia and Artsakh. It is the source of 85% of the water resources for the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (97% of the current territory of Artsakh), including the Arpa and Vorotan rivers, which are strategically significant for the Republic of Armenia as their waters are used to save Lake Sevan from drying out.

The consequences of poisoning the Karvachar water intake station for Armenia and Artsakh could be catastrophic. The urgent demand is to deploy peacekeeping forces in the mentioned watershed area, as the risk of poisoning the watershed waters by the adversary is very high. For security reasons, it is necessary to have a modern research laboratory to monitor the quality of water coming from Azerbaijan to the territories of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh.

We ask you to show initiative, support, and mediation in addressing these urgent issues. Thank you for your attention and potential cooperation.”
