On March 2, the Sinabung stratovolcano located on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, became active, erupting a column of ash and smoke rising up to 5 kilometers high.
According to rg.ru, this marks the first significant eruption of the active volcano since August 2020. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, although the surrounding area has been covered in ash.
Sinabung has been in an active state recently, periodically emitting ash and rocks. Residents of nearby communities have been living in a state of heightened alert for over a month now.
The volcano awakened in August 2010 after a 400-year hiatus, and it has since erupted almost annually.
