Birthplace of Martakert Resident Listed as Azerbaijan in Passport
Former member of the Yerevan City Council Arsen Karapetyan wrote on his Facebook page: “My friend has returned to Armenia after a long process to obtain citizenship. He went joyfully to finally receive his passport and came back sad. He is originally from Martakert. They wrote his place of birth as Azerbaijan. They argued, were indignant, saying, ‘We’re not pleased either, but this is the rule.’ Now the question is, what does this word they wrote mean? Neither the Azerbaijan SSR (which wouldn't be pleasant either but at least understandable), nor the NKR, no, simply Azerbaijan. Such a state has never existed, or is it a geographical designation? Now my friend says, well, finally I got the citizenship I dreamed of, and it turned out I’m from Azerbaijan. What kind of nonsense is this? When we talk about betrayal, isn’t this our state’s attitude and concept? I don’t accept that this is just ignorance or sloppiness. What else are we discussing, what status, what thing? I don’t know how long this rule has been established, please inform me if you know.
P.S. To those who might doubt, I will say: it’s not Photoshop, it’s written the same in Armenian, and this commentary is my personal opinion; you can agree or disagree, there’s no need to call to ask for more details, I’ve written what I wanted, no need to convince me, my time is precious, and yours — you know.
