Turkish-Iranian Relations Tense: New Developments
The Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, has condemned the Turkish military's incursion into northern Iraq, asserting that Ankara is violating Iraq's territorial integrity. The Iranian ambassador also stated that Tehran is calling for Turkey to withdraw its troops from Iraq and respect internationally recognized borders, according to Ermenihaber.
“We reject Turkey's interference in Iraq; Turkish forces should not pose a threat or violate Iraq's sovereignty,” the official said, adding that actions undermining Iraq's sovereignty are unacceptable, not only from Turkey but also from those countries involved.
Earlier, tensions had already arisen in Turkish-Iranian relations. The Turkish ambassador to Tehran, Derya Ersin, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was presented with Iran's protest note regarding a statement made by Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, which claimed that a group of members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), considered a terrorist organization in Turkey, is present in Iran.
